720 ILCS 5/18-1

Unlike theft, robberies are not treated as property crimes as they involve direct confrontation with another person. Illinois law defines a robbery as the taking of property from another by the use of force or by the threat of the use of force. This type of offense can be charged as Class 2 or Class 1 felonies depending on the circumstances. The penalties are even more severe if a firearm is used or is even just believed to be present in the commission of a robbery. In these instances, you can be charged with a Class X felony, which carries a sentencing range of between 6 and 30 years in prison.
